If you're a gay man who struggles to say no, constantly worries about what people think, or feels responsible for everyone else's emotions — you're not weak. You learned this. And you learned it for a reason.

It started as survival.

Growing up gay in a world that wasn't always safe, many of us figured out early that fitting in kept us protected. We learned to read the room. To shrink. To be what people needed us to be so they wouldn't reject us — or worse.

I know this because I lived it. I spent years being whoever the room needed me to be. At work. In relationships. With my family. I was great at reading people — and terrible at knowing what I actually wanted. It took me more than 20 years to realize that wasn't a personality trait. It was a survival strategy I'd outgrown.

That skill kept us safe as kids. But you're not a kid anymore. And now it's costing you.

People-pleasing shows up as:

\- Saying yes when you mean no

\- Over-explaining yourself

\- Feeling anxious when someone seems upset with you

\- Putting everyone else's needs before your own

\- Attracting people who take more than they give

This isn't a confidence problem. It's a pattern.

Most gay men who people-please don't lack confidence. They lack self-trust. They've spent so long looking outward for approval that they've lost the ability to trust their own instincts.

One of my clients came to me after years of saying yes to everyone and feeling completely invisible in his own life. He wasn't weak. He was exhausted. Within a few months of working together he started catching himself before the pattern kicked in. He started choosing himself — not perfectly, but consistently. That's what change actually looks like.

The fix isn't learning to be more assertive. It's going back to where the pattern started and changing the belief underneath it.

Why Gay Men Become People-Pleasers

When you understand why you people-please — not just that you do it — the pattern starts to lose its grip. That's the work I do with gay men in the Unstuck & Unashamed coaching program.
