You sent the text. Now you're analyzing every word of the reply. You replay the conversation from last night. You run through every possible way something could go wrong. You can't turn it off.

If this is you — you're not anxious for no reason. There's a story underneath it.

I used to do the same thing. I'd replay every conversation after it happened. Every text. Every interaction. Wondering what I did wrong, what they thought of me, whether I was too much or not enough. It was exhausting. And the worst part? I didn't realize it wasn't normal until I started doing the real work on myself.

Overthinking is not a thinking problem.

It feels like a brain issue. It's not. Overthinking is your nervous system trying to control uncertainty. It's scanning for threats, trying to predict outcomes, trying to stay safe.

For many gay men, this started young. When you're not sure if you're fully accepted — by your family, your peers, your community — your brain learns to stay on high alert. It watches for signs of rejection. It second-guesses everything.

That hypervigilance protected you once. Now it's exhausting you.

Overthinking looks like:

\- Replaying conversations looking for what you did wrong

\- Waiting for the other shoe to drop in good situations

\- Needing reassurance even when things are fine

\- Struggling to be present because your mind won't stop

\- Feeling anxious when you don't hear back quickly

One of my clients described it perfectly. He said his brain was like a browser with 47 tabs open — all the time. He couldn't be present in a date, a conversation, or even a quiet moment alone. After working together he learned to recognize when the spiral was starting — and how to interrupt it before it took over. The tabs didn't disappear overnight. But he learned to close them.

The fix isn't "just stop thinking about it."

You've probably already tried that. It doesn't work because the pattern isn't in your thoughts — it's in your nervous system. The thoughts are a symptom.

Real change happens when you address the belief driving the alarm. Usually it's something like: I'm going to be rejected. I'm not enough. I have to stay vigilant to stay safe.

You can get quiet.

That constant hum of anxiety in the background — it doesn't have to be permanent. Gay men I've worked with have learned to regulate their nervous system and trust themselves again. Not by thinking their way out of it. By changing what's underneath.
